Periscope Usage is Up, as is Twitter DM Count | Social You Should Know

Twitter Increases DM Character Limit

Twitter is giving its long-winded users 9,860 new reasons to love the social network by increasing the character limit in direct messages. The change comes as Twitter execs are looking at ways to revamp their appeal to social users, and contend with other popular networks. With the new 10,000 character limit, maybe it’s just a way for those who are trying to channel their inner John Mayer and say what they need to say without having to spread it across multiple messages.

Periscope Off to a Hot Start

Just four months in and Periscope is claiming they’ve surpassed the 10 Million accounts mark. They’re even touting Time Watched at 40-years’ worth of video per day (depicted in the chart below), which they are also using as one form of measurement to value the live video platform.

According to The Guardian writer Hannah Jane Parkinson, there are 10 types of Periscope users. Amongst them she describes: the journalist, citizen journalists, perverts (note: some of the terms she user to describe perverts we at Ignite Social Media would NEVER use (-;), the guy staring into his fridge, the reviewer, the AMAer, the petrolhead, the cute pet, the drunk, and the copyright infringer. Interesting how quickly these have developed in such little time.

YouTube Bids Adieu to the 301+

YouTube has finally removed the 301+ play count in order to provide more real-time view counts. In an August 5th tweet, YouTube describes via infograph how they are filtering real views from phantom bot views. Based on Twitter comments, creators are much appreciative of the move, even if they have yet to see its impact on their videos.
